An acorn can only grow into a tree if there is room for the roots to take soil. That’s why Blue Acorn has opened up a new expansion, effectively increasing our office space by 50%.
Walking into our office has always been like walking into a beehive of activity. To date, we’ve been packed to the door with employees (which really puts smudges on the glass). With the new space, we’ve created a “buffer zone” in the front of the office.
Now when people walk in, they need not worry about getting trampled by a developer on his way to a daily standup meeting. The new reception area offers two leather armchairs and some quietude from the buzz of Blue Acorn’s worker bees. Clients can abide in seductive repose like Don Draper while prospective employees anxiously await for the lie detector tests to warm up.
To the left of the reception area is a lounge with two leather sofas. It’s like a quiet meadow for Blue Acorn employees to gather and discuss Minecraft or Metroid. It’s also perfect for informal meetings between team members.
When you walk into the new office, the first area you’ll see is dedicated to the Human Resources Office and The Home of General Accounting & Recording. We are informally calling it Hrothgar because of the Beowulf-like qualities of its inhabitants and the fact that it is an acronym for the legendary mead hall.
One of the most important parts of the expansion is a new home for one of our development teams. The area includes space for 9 people to sit comfortably with dual monitors or for 20 people to sit awkwardly with Sony Vaios.
Our COO, Toby Hemmerling, will no longer operate out of a cardboard box and will instead have his own office for issuing orders, making battle plans, and holding secret meetings. The space is just large enough for all his displays, file cabinets, and maps of Poland (he’s German).
In the center of the new expansion is a large open area about twice the size of our conference rooms. We like to think that the open space represents possibility and our untapped potential. Until then, it will operate as a place for company-wide meetings, presentations, and after hour work games like “See How Far We Can Throw the Intern.”
So don’t be shy. Come and chill with us in our new office. We’ll bring the beer. You bring your eCommerce troubles…or cupcakes. The choice is yours.
